Many newcomers to Spain, both new residents and visitors alike do not understand the concept of savings when it comes to currency exchange. Most people still use banks to exchange currency and transfer funds abroad. Yet, banks do not necessarily provide the best rates or fees from one monetary source to another. The reason most of us do not investigate other sources for exchange is usually out of fear and uncertainty but it is quite simple to locate a reputable foreign exchange specialist in Spain.

And while banks are open Monday thru Friday typically from 9:00 until 4:00 in the afternoon and Saturdays from 9:00 until 3:00, most charge a substantial commission on these types of foreign transactions. Although most offer English speaking staff to assist with handling most every type of transaction worldwide, these are simply not the most economical source.

Within major tourist areas there are endless shops and various exchange offices which handle most currencies. Major credit cards such as Visa, Master Card and American Express are typically accepted all over the country of Spain as well. A surcharge is customary on bank card use. In addition, most establishments have a limit on the amount of money which can be withdrawn and exchanged.

Certain standards apply to monetary exchanges such as the rates posted will usually offer two prices. One price states the price which your currency is purchased and the other reflects the price at which the new currency is sold. In other words, the price you will pay to purchase the new currency. The difference between the two prices, of course, is the spread. It is the cost of doing business for you to exchange your currency with that particular business. In other words, it is the profit someone is making for allowing you the opportunity to exchange your other money.

Here are two important tips to commit to memory in regard to exchanging money. Always bring your passport. You will definitely need it in order to establish and earn a given degree of trust. Second, the easier the manner of transacting a currency exchange typically is the more costly.

For larger sums of money it is best to employ the services of a special foreign exchange broker. Your transaction will be safer, and they should be able to get you an exchange rate nearer to the mid-price resulting in savings on fees.
