Spain has always held a certain magic for most, especially those from cooler climates such as Great Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe. Passion, as well as temperature, warms our skin as we come in contact with the vibrant people of Spain and all but a few fall drunk under Spain's spell.
Every summer, holiday makers come to magic Spain to have a taste of a life that may be really very different from their own life back home. Trading clouds for clear skies, scarf weather for flip-flop weather and English for, well, broken Spanish; in flocks they come.
But what IS this magic of Spain? Why does it attract us so?
Part of Spain's magic is inevitably provided to us by its people. Now, every nation has personality traits which could be perceived as positive or slightly negative, but what no one can debate when speaking of the Spaniards is their lack of passion. This passion is injected into every area of their existence. They love with passion and my, how they argue with passion. And that's what creates some of their magic. Everything is worthy of discussion. That passion creates a warmth which is equaled by their country’s climate and it is passed on to all people, natives and foreigners alike.
The tastes and aromas of Spain are certainly other culprits in this discussion. Where else can you go to a bar, any bar, and have the most flavorsome olives, the smoothest olive oil poured over the crunchiest bread, all accompanied by the deepest red wine...all in exchange for the small change sitting in your pocket.
There are so many unique culinary offerings in Spain. Many people visit solely for the food; paella, crema Catalan, chorizo, olives, jamon serrano, turron and variations of high quality wines.
The food itself is delicious and unique but what is equally charming is the attitude the Spaniards have towards their food. Food is always formed around a social event, albeit as simple as a lunch with friends or family. The Spaniards love their food and that love is passed on so easily to Spain's visitors.
Naturally, the people and the food of Spain are as they are because the land is how IT is. For example, on Spain's coast, seafood is brought in for lunch every day; mussels, prawns, various types of fish and mollusks are enjoyed. But the right wine must be created to be drunk with such delicious cuisine. For the right wine to come about, the right grape vines must be sown. For the right grapes to grow, they need the correct soil and climate. The people of Spain grow and then consume their produce; hence they become part of what they create.
And so we see that the food, the people and the land are all sown together in a rich tapestry. The tapestry is all the advertisement that Spain needs. People come and will continue to come in hoards, at all times of the year, in order to experience some of the magic which Spain has to offer.
